Marketing

Brand identity, research before design.

Most identity work starts with mood boards. Strong work starts earlier: positioning, customer interviews and a hard look at competitors. Design follows the decisions.

The short answer

A brand identity for a Dubai business should start with research: stakeholder and customer interviews, a competitor audit and a written positioning, before any logo work. Then comes a bilingual English and Arabic identity system and guidelines your team can use. A full identity typically takes eight to twelve weeks.

What does a brand identity include?

  • Strategy: positioning, promise, values, personality and tone of voice. Decisions and words, not visuals.
  • Identity system: logo, colour, typography, photography and illustration direction, layout principles and voice guidelines.
  • Application: templates and rules that keep the brand consistent wherever it appears.

How long does a brand identity take?

Phase 1, strategy (about weeks 1–3): stakeholder and customer interviews (usually five to ten), a competitive audit and a positioning statement. Output: a written strategic brief.

Phase 2, identity design (about weeks 4–7): logo exploration (usually three directions narrowed to one), colour, English and Arabic typography, photography and illustration direction, with review rounds. Output: production-ready files.

Phase 3, application (about weeks 8–12): brand guidelines, a template library, a website style guide and voice examples. Output: tools your team can use without me.

What is different about branding in Dubai?

The audience is digital and crowded: the UAE had 12.5 million social media user identities against a population of 11.4 million in late 2025, according to DataReportal, so a brand has to read instantly at thumbnail size in two scripts.

  • Bilingual from day one. The identity has to work in Arabic and English, which affects type, proportions and the logo itself. Arabic is designed in parallel, with specialist type partners, not translated at the end.
  • Cultural context. Colours, imagery and symbols can carry local meaning.
  • Premium expectations. What looks adequate elsewhere can look budget here.
  • Many channels at once: Instagram, WhatsApp, events and print, often in the same week.

Common patterns

  • “We already have a logo.” Often the fix is a system around it, not a new logo.
  • Over-designed marks that fail at small sizes and on screens.
  • English-first identities that break in Arabic.

How does branding affect search and AI answers?

Recognition now happens inside AI answers too. In controlled tests, content with quotations and statistics gained 28–41% more visibility in generative engine responses, according to the GEO study (KDD 2024); a consistent name, voice and set of facts makes those citations attach to you.

“GEO can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses.”

A consistent identity makes a business easier to recognise and trust, for people and for search and AI systems trying to connect your website, profiles and mentions into one entity. See SEO for AI search.

A rushed identity tends to be replaced soon after. I’ll push back on timelines that would skip the research.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Isn’t brand identity just a logo and colours?

No. A logo is one piece. Identity includes positioning, voice, the visual system and how it all applies across touchpoints.

How long does it take?

A full identity typically takes eight to twelve weeks. Compressing the research phase is where most brand problems start.

Do you work with startups?

Yes. Startups get a focused, minimum viable brand; established companies get rebrands, evolutions or brand architecture.

How is this different from a typical agency?

Most agencies are design-led. This is research-led: interviews, audits and positioning come before any design.

What’s the difference between a new identity and a rebrand?

A new identity creates a brand. A rebrand changes an existing one, with extra risk around recognition, internal buy-in and migration, which is planned for early.

How do you handle Arabic?

As its own design system, with specialist Arabic typography partners, developed alongside the English.
