SEO for AI search in 2026: how to get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode

AI answers now sit above the blue links. What the 2026 evidence says about clicks, which AI crawlers to allow, and how to structure pages so AI engines cite you.

The short answer

Generative engine optimization means making your pages easy for AI answer engines to find, understand and cite. Allow the AI search crawlers in robots.txt and serve content as plain HTML. Answer the question in the first lines and support it with dated, sourced facts and structured data. Keep one consistent identity across the web. Treat llms.txt as optional, because Google says it doesn't use it.

Key takeaways

  • AI answers take clicks. In a 2026 field experiment, Google’s AI Mode cut external click-through rates by 18.8 percentage points.
  • Being cited is the new ranking. If the answer quotes you, you keep visibility even when clicks fall.
  • Allow AI search crawlers in robots.txt, and check that your CDN isn’t blocking them by default.
  • Answer first, then prove it: a short direct answer, then dated facts with sources, tables and FAQs.
  • llms.txt is optional. Google has said it doesn’t use it. robots.txt and good HTML matter more.

What the evidence says in 2026

Each assistant draws on a different index. Google’s AI Overviews and Gemini use Google’s; ChatGPT search uses OpenAI’s own crawler plus partners led by Bing; and Anthropic lists Brave Search among Claude’s web-search providers, as TechCrunch reported in 2025. Being indexed by Google, Bing and Brave is the floor.

“There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”

Google Search Central, AI features and your website

  • A preregistered field experiment by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and Northeastern University (August 2026, 1,100 US users) found Google’s AI Mode reduced external click-through by 18.8 points, while removing AI features raised it by 8.8 points. AI Mode also pushed some users to try other search engines.
  • Pew Research Center found users clicked a traditional result 8% of the time when an AI Overview appeared, versus 15% without one.

Fewer clicks reach websites, and the ones that do often come through citations inside the AI answer. GEO is about earning those citations.

1. Let the right crawlers in

Crawler Company Purpose
OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User OpenAI ChatGPT search and user-requested fetches
GPTBot OpenAI Model training
Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User Anthropic Claude’s search and user fetches
ClaudeBot Anthropic Model training
PerplexityBot Perplexity Search and citations
Google-Extended Google Gemini training control (Search uses Googlebot)

Block the training bots if you don’t want your content used for training, but allow the search and user bots if you want to be cited. Some CDNs block AI crawlers by default on new sites; check your settings. This site’s robots.txt allows them all.

2. Write pages that are easy to quote

  • Lead with the answer. Two or three sentences that fully answer the headline question. Every guide on this site opens with “The short answer” for this reason.
  • Use real numbers with dates and sources. “AED 682.5 billion of sales in 2025 (DLD)” beats “a booming market”.
  • Structure: descriptive H2s, short paragraphs, tables for comparisons, and a FAQ that mirrors how people ask.
  • Be specific to a place and a person. “Off-plan due diligence in Dubai” beats “property tips”.
  • Keep it fresh. Show the last-checked date and update it when rules change.

3. Make your identity unambiguous

Content-level changes also move the needle: in the GEO study (KDD 2024), adding quotations raised visibility in generative answers by about 41%, statistics by about 31% and source citations by about 28%, on a 10,000-query benchmark.

AI engines connect facts to entities. Help them:

  • Structured data: Person, Organization or ProfessionalService, Article and FAQPage, with the same name, logo and sameAs profile links everywhere.
  • Consistency: the same name, title and description on your site, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and directories.
  • Authorship: a real author with a bio and an editorial policy.

4. Serve HTML, not just JavaScript

Many AI crawlers don’t run JavaScript well. Content that only appears after scripts run may be invisible to them. Server-render or pre-render your main content, as this site does with static HTML.

5. llms.txt: the honest verdict

llms.txt is a proposed file that summarises your site for language models. Google’s representatives have said Google doesn’t use it, and crawler-log studies show AI bots rarely request it. It costs little if your build generates it automatically (this site’s does), but don’t expect it to move results on its own.

Measuring GEO

  • Track referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and similar in analytics.
  • Ask the AI tools your customers use the questions they ask, monthly, and record whether you’re cited.
  • Watch branded search volume. Citations without clicks often show up as people searching your name later.

Frequently asked questions

What is generative engine optimization?

GEO is the practice of making content easy for AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Mode to retrieve, understand and cite, so your brand appears in their answers.

Is GEO different from SEO?

It builds on SEO. Crawlability, quality content and links still matter. GEO adds answer-first structure, entity consistency, sourced facts and attention to AI-specific crawlers and citation behaviour.

Should I add an llms.txt file?

It’s optional. Google has said it doesn’t use llms.txt, and adoption by AI crawlers is minimal. Prioritise robots.txt access, server-rendered HTML and well-structured content.
